Since the pandemic, our outdoor spaces have been more important to us than ever before. However, you don’t need a large garden to enjoy time in the great outdoors.

At 59 Lansdown in Cheltenham, we have a stunning collection of two-bedroom apartments each with its own balcony, the perfect spot to relax and entertain.

Here’s our top five tips for creating a perfect balcony garden, that will be the envy of your neighbours:

Get creative with space – plant up your balcony garden on multiple levels, using plant pots for lower level planting and work your way up with wall planters and on-trend macrame plant hangers. Plants such as begonias, fuchsia and fern grow really well in lightly-shaded areas and don’t require too much space.

Encourage wildlife – butterflies and bees are really the finishing touch to a beautiful garden and will help keep your mini green spaces thriving. A balcony border of flowering plants and shrubs give nectar rich food to butterflies and bees. You can also install bee and bug biomes and bird feeders to the walls of your balcony to offer them a safe habitat.

Light it up - Light up your balcony with calming lights. You could use string lights, paper lanterns or solar lights to add a glow to your new outdoor space. You could even go seasonal and add some colourful Christmas lights.

Grow some veggies – there are plenty of opportunities to grow vegetables and herbs in your balcony garden. Those that grow in pots include tomatoes, bell peppers and radishes; and you can also grow herbs like rosemary, mint, or thyme.

Invest in a bistro set – once you’ve created your balcony garden, you really want to be able to sit and enjoy it. A two-seater bistro set is a cosy and trendy way to add furniture to your balcony, eat al fresco and relax with a good book.
