This year’s ‘not-to-be-missed’ TV series adorning many a screen across the country, and in fact the world, is Bridgerton. Recently renewed for a second season and expected to land on Netflix in early 2022, the programme follows the trials and tribulations of a large family living in Regency England in the 1820s. Whilst the characters of Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset are the main protagonists capturing the hearts and minds of the British public, the backdrop to their love story has been the striking architecture of the period.

With the red-brick Georgian ‘Ranger’s House’ mansion in South London serving as the Bridgerton’s abode and No.1 Crescent Museum in Bath offering the fantastic frontage for the Featheringtons, many viewers have been in awe of the beautiful interiors, high ceilings and bright and open design that Regency architecture offers.

However, you don’t need to be living in ‘the Ton’ (Britain's high society during the early 1800s) to achieve your Regency dreams. Cala Homes has taken Regency architecture and brought it into the 21st Century at our 59 Lansdown development in Cheltenham.

Andrew Dicker, Regional Managing Director at Cala Homes, explains how we took the best of Regency design and implemented it within the flagship development.

“Our redevelopment of the former Gloucestershire police headquarters brought with it the opportunity to emulate the very best of Cheltenham’s Georgian architecture within our design at this iconic site.

“The location of our development, set within the two highly-exclusive conservation areas of Dean Park and Hatherley Park, provided us with no end of inspiration for its design. Reimagining Georgian architecture for the 21st Century, the development features three grand period-style apartment buildings providing an attractive frontage onto Lansdown Road. Behind, sit three storey villas - in part using a curved terrace - echoing properties in the local area.

“The scale and proportion of the villas reflect the timeless principles of Georgian architecture. Inside, the homes feature sash windows, traditional high ceilings with elegant detailed cornicing, taller doors and roof lanterns that flood the properties with natural light.

“The use of a plinth, middle and top floor in the apartment buildings mimics the traditional ordering of Georgian villas, as does the use of a ‘lantern storey’ which is set back from the main elevation and hosts the stunning penthouses. One of the apartment blocks provides a dual-aspect given its prominent corner position, with contemporary elevations designed to mirror its neighbouring Wilton House – a locally listed building.

“A simple palette of materials was used, including high quality reproduction Ashlar Stone in three shade variances, buff-coloured brick work, powder-coated metal panelling, aluminium-framed glazed windows and natural slate roofs.

“Attractive street scenes have been created with rich landscaping and mature retained trees, as well as new avenue trees and planting providing a beautiful frontage to many properties on the development.

“59 Lansdown is a development that we are extremely proud of. The development offers the very best of Georgian Regency architecture with all of the modern and low-maintenance features of new build homes. Elements such as high energy efficiency, ample storage and underfloor heating all make these period style properties ideal for 21st Century living.”

With Bridgerton having just been renewed for a second season, fans will be looking forward to indulging in plenty more Georgian glamour, Lady Whistledown gossip and Regency grandeur.

In the meantime though, visit 59 Lansdown to see for yourself the stunning Regency architecture on display, and find the perfect new home to satisfy your longing for Georgian grandeur, with a modern twist. Perhaps you can also enjoy a promenade around the development’s green spaces and tree-lined avenues.
