Working with interior designer, Jon Pilling from Abode, we have given our showhomes a festive feel with decorations in the build up to Christmas. Here, Jon provides his top tips on how to decorate the home for festive period.
Jon said: “Creating a tasteful Christmas look to the exterior of a house is all about simplicity and timelessness. You want to quietly announce that it’s Christmas with natural products and simple natural colours. I’d opt for wood colours in bark, pine cones, branches and twigs mixed in with greenery from holly and other evergreen. For a touch of contrast, introduce touches of silver and even glass baubles. Hanging topiary from porches can be jazzed up with some simple pin dot fairy lights.
“To truly bring the magic of Christmas inside of the home, it’s important to create an overall inviting atmosphere that has a decadent and luxurious edge. When choosing a tree, try to go for a real one as they bring a subtle Christmassy smell of pine to the house and look great. Simplicity is also key when dressing your tree, so I would advise using three colours or tones to create a timeless feel. For example, the White Company have stunning decorations such as white glass balls, subtle aged silver decorations and fluffy white feature. Less really is more.
“In the dining room, set the scene for the big day by stylishly dressing the table with festive trimmings. Styling your dining table should be an extension of your Christmas tree decoration. Large glass vases filled with twigs from your tree, pin lights and some of the tree decorations will create a harmonious feel.
“It’s also important to remember that Christmas décor doesn’t have to be restricted to the ground floor of the home. Add accessories to the bedrooms, such as tying Christmas stockings to the headboard or end of the bed in the master bedroom or adding a playful pink Christmas tree in a girl’s bedroom to create an enchanting escape.
“To spread Christmas cheer throughout each room, my tip would be to immerse the home with scented candles or reed diffusers that evoke hints of cinnamon and spiced orange, frankincense or nutmeg. The flicker of candlelight teamed with warming aromas will make for the ultimate festive feeling.”
