Carers Link, an organisation which provides support to carers across East Dunbartonshire, has been awarded £1,000 from Cala Homes (West) as part of its annual community bursary scheme.
The non-profit organisation offers help to anyone who provides regular unpaid support, whether to a child, partner, relative or friend who cannot manage without their help.
During the summer holidays, Carers Link runs drop-in sessions in Bishopbriggs for young carers who look after someone in their family.
Carers Link staff organise trips away for the youngsters as well as activities and visits from speakers who hold demonstrations and workshops. Last week, the group was visited by chocolatier Denise Brennan, who hosted a chocolate party, where the children were taught how to craft their own chocolate creations.
Amrit Bedi, Young Carer Service Coordinator, said: “These groups are a great opportunity for young carers to meet other young people who are in a similar situation, allowing them to share their experiences and build new friendships.
“It’s so important as being a carer can often be extremely isolating, especially at such a young age. We aim to provide a safe space for them where they can receive emotional support as well as having fun with other people their own age.
“This donation from Cala is a great boost for us and it’ll go towards running these groups that are so vital for young carers.”
Liana Canavan, Sales and Marketing Director of Cala Homes (West), said: “This is a very important initiative which we’re proud to support through our community bursary scheme.
“Carers Link is doing some fantastic work in the local community and the drop in sessions for young carers are a wonderful example of this.
“We hope this donation will allow the charity to continue running these groups which are evidently an important source of support to many young people across East Dunbartonshire.”
